Shopify adds GS1 barcode checks — review suggestions before accepting
Shopify can recognise registered product identifiers. Existing barcode values still need a merchant’s review.

Shopify announced barcode suggestions on 29 October that check possible GTINs against the GS1 registry. A GTIN is the product identifier used by channels such as Google to match a listing to the right item.
When a newly entered barcode is registered with GS1, Shopify can mark its type as GTIN. Previously saved Custom codes may receive a suggestion instead. Merchants can accept or dismiss suggestions in the product and inventory bulk editors.
The distinction is important: Shopify says it does not change an existing saved barcode unless the merchant accepts the suggestion. Registry messages do not prevent saving, and internal identifiers can remain Custom. A warning lets staff compare the vendor and product name against the registry without requiring matching storefront wording.
Our take: treat this as a catalogue check. Before accepting suggestions in bulk, inspect a few products and variants against the actual identifiers on their packaging or supplier records. A registry match is a useful signal; it does not establish that a particular listing, variant or destination is correct.
For shops selling through several channels, the practical task is to separate internal stock codes from recognised product identifiers. The announcement does not demonstrate improved sales or guaranteed channel acceptance.
